Now that I have been bitten by the biker bug, I’m already thinking of adding on to my stable. One bike I’ve always been in love with is the Suzuki TL1000R. To me there is nothing like a V-Twin sportbike. The sound this machine produces is down right heavenly. Nowhere near as fast as a inline four liter bike but has a MUCH better torque curve and makes it a much better all around bike. The TL1000R makes 135hp About the same as current 600cc sportbikes.

I’ll keep my eyes open for a nice low miles 100% stock one. Hopefully between now and a year from now I can find the right bike at the right price.

Just listen to it!!!

Yes, do it! We need more people (who aren’t cruiser folk) to join the cult of the v-twin.

I always wanted one of these when I had a GSXR 600. Would have been a nice counterpoint to my stable. They have aged relatively well, with the exception of those two massive pringles cans on either side of the swingarm.

My roommate in college had a 2000 TL1000R (in 2001-02). He laid it down on a metal bridge on a dewy morning (not the bikes fault) and it was hit by oncoming traffic, end of bike. Prior to that he rode it like he stole it and it could outperform even those crazy expectations. These bikes were nuts.

I’m a long time fan of v-twin(non cruiser) bikes. but not really all that much into Ducatis which sucks since they are primarily the only brand left.

But Zuk TL1000R, Honda RC51,ect yes please!!!

KTM and Aprillia (until recently >:( ) were keeping the flame alive too. I want an RC8 pretty badly as it’s kind of the ultimate version of the V-twin sportbike.

But I love my SV650, one of the best bikes I’ve ever owned, like it a lot better than the various I-4s I’ve owned over the years.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I wouldn’t want my legs around a 4 liter bike. I barely need 1/6th!

When I convince Mrs. Something-Clever-Here that a 16-17K Ducati 959 Panigale is a sounds financial decision, I will gladly join your cult.

The RC8 is a little too nuts for me. 130-140hp is as much as I would want on a bike. I only ride at 5/10th maybe 6/10ths on a spirited drive so most of that would go to waste anyway.

I thought the Aprilias were V4's?

Hey now! That wasn’t intended to be a slight against cruisers, I was just saying that it’s a fantastic engine configuration but it’s pretty much standard on cruisers.

I loved my old Virago and hope to pick up another soon to round out the stable.

The Aprilias were Rotax V-twin until 2009. I’ve actually been lusting after the V-twin tuonos pretty hard lately too.

And I hear you on the too much thing, that’s one of the reasons I sold my Literbike and picked up a Supermoto and an SV650.

A Virago is more of a standard, or is my definition of a standard all fucked up?

I don’t know, mine was a bit modified to make it a little more standard (flatter bars blacked out chrome) the stock ones are definitely what I’d put in the cruiser category.

Kinja'd!!!

And the 84+ models push even more cruiser-y (at least to me)

I had a TL1000S for a while, and after that a V-Strom 1000. I love me some V-Twin.

If you want a newer V-Twin bike, maybe look at 2006 RC51 RVT1000R.

FYI, they sound good stock, but they sound awesome with some Yoshimuras or D&Ds

It’s never the bike it’s the rider. I’m so sick of hearing oh that’s too much bike for you or you should start with a 250cc bike. I’m over 10 years older than you and way more mature than most people. I know and understand my limits as well as I have A LOT to live for.

It doesn’t matter what bike you choose is you ride for the sake of riding and not to be the next Valentino Rossi you’ll be fine. I agree with you if you are 18 buying your first bike don’t do it because you simply don’t have the brain for it and you think you are indestructible.

if your in your 30's/40's and you want a Hayabusa then by all means go get a damn hayabusa.

The TL 1000 engine is a 90 degree twin, thus L-twin. L-twin is a subset of V-twin with better balancing characteristics.

You may be 10 years older. But you dont have 10 years more riding experiance.

why not both? Rider and bike, that is. And yes, most people should start with a 250/300 not only because they’re fun but because it’s more forgiving to learn throttle/clutch controls etc than on a 600+ cc sportbike. I’ve been riding dirtbikes since I was a kid, but didn’t get my license until I was 20, and started on a 250. Six years later, I own an R6 and I am very grateful I didn’t hop right onto said R6 as a brand new street-licensed rider.

PS: My dad’s in his 50s and still rides like a maniac, whether it’s on a Triumph Trophy or a GSXR750, so age is no guarantee of maturity, not to mention a pretty rude way to dismiss Pete’s (unsolicited, but well-intentioned) advice.

/soapbox

That said, I’m sure you’re also not going to run out and buy a TL1000R *this second,* so enjoy the Yamaha and have a good first season :)

Can I jump in here real quick? I haven’t been riding for too long and only a few weeks ago went from a Ninja 400R to a ZX-6R. I agree that the rider plays an important role and I think an idiot is an idiot and can wrap himself around a pole on a 250 cc or a 1 L superbike.

BUT

My 600 is a beast. It seriously doesn’t take much to get that thing up to illegal speeds and I’m fully aware that I can’t comprehend its limits until I take some lessons at a track school. The clutch is on/off, the throttle is on/off... it’s physically more demanding to ride.

Once again, I agree that someone level-headed has the ability to survive on a fast bike. But do keep in mind that it’s not just about how you keep your cool - it’s about understanding that some of these bikes are downright challenging to ride. I didn’t completely understand that til a few weeks ago.
